The default way of saying “to take a test” is dar un examen which is literally “to give an exam”, because you hand a test in to your teacher. Along the same lines, the default way a teacher “gives a test” is tomar un examen because they “take” the tests that the students turn in. For that reason, dar un examen is often translated as “to sit for an exam” to help the meaning come across more easily.

Your hands may be a little clammy from nerves, but keep the conversation warm and easy-going. How to show warmth? When you’re doing prep work, jot down some potential warmth-inducing stories. Even if it's not in-person interview, a candidate story creates a special memory for the interviewer.
“Tell Me About Yourself”
This may be the most dreaded question in an interview. “Um…I studied Chemistry and like bread?” It’s a tough one as its encompassing and open-ended. What am I good at?

At the core, a potential employer has 3 essential questions. The questions that interviewers wish they could ask, but try to answer for themselves:
“What’s it like working with you?”
They’re trying to answer whether you’ll be a cool person to work with. Again they know they’ll be spending considerable time alongside you; they don’t want to hire a jerk or someone that doesn’t contribute to a team project. The more you share, the better picture they’ll gain about working with you.
“Are you a willing learner?”
Are you a person that is teachable? Do you have a good attitude about trying to learn new things? Or are you a person that doesn’t really value trying to learn new skills as needed? Most employers understand if you don’t have the tools necessary for the job; they’re looking for someone who is an eager student.
“Do you take the initiative?”
No one wants a team member that waits for instruction. Are you an individual that has taken on new challenges and projects because that’s what your past employer needed—even before the employer realized it? Highlight your initiate with an example or two. Show the interviewer you can “pull your weight”, while still always trying to contribute to the larger team’s success. Self-starters are a great addition to any team.
Any other special tips if it's a video interview?
Interviewing videos and in-person interviews differ by only one variable: creating the best setting for a video interview. Luckily that's one variable within your control. Video interviewing is very much a candidate-centric approach to interviews. It gives a candidate and those scheduling job interviews a range of conveniences. For a video interview, you may want to keep these key choices in mind:
Use a well-lit space
Interviewers want to see your face; video interviews with good lighting goes a long way. It’s a little odd when people’s faces are in the dark. That may be the primates in us speaking, but we don’t really tend to trust those in dark lighting. Find a room or corner that has natural light that hits your face. Be sure that the light is not behind you, otherwise your face will be in a shadow.
Eliminate a distracting background
A video interview may be an excuse to clean up your living space. Clear out any distracting pieces of artwork, clothes, or anything else that may make an interviewer go, “Wow, that’s a little messy” or “That’s a bit inappropriate”. If you have any questions, stray on the more conservative side. If your prize, mounted stuffed pig head seems a bit too much, just take down for the video interview.
Check your tools (camera, phone, connection, etc.)
Double check that your Internet connection is fast and reliable. You may want to check out Speedtest.net the day before an interview. As a broadband speed testing tool, it assists in measuring how quickly your connection is. If you do it the day before, chances that connection will crash minimizes. Be sure your camera is up and running. You may want to do a test call with a sibling or friend. If your video interview is on-the-go, make sure your phone is charged, or have a charging cord nearby.
Dress simply
In a video interview, an employer typically sees only above your shoulders via the camera. Which is great if you're just wearing pajama pants. Focus on wearing non-distracting clothing. Sometimes even the most fabulous outfits don't translate that well on video. Wear a simple blouse or collared shirt for video interviews that will allow them to concentrate on you.

In honor of me going back to school have some SH Modern AU Headcanons
Jenna's best subject is history and she's in debate and always wins.
Sep's best subject is chemistry hands down. JROTC (like a high school military kinda training) is the one thing school wise he will NEVER try at least once for obvious reasons.
Also Jenna and Sep do homework together (even though Jenna is in a few advanced classes) and Jenna helps Sep actually understand and keep up.
Nicko is in tech school or whatever equivalent in which he learns a trade (boatmaking). He skips all other classes most of the time. Solid C student though.
Jojo is super good at English. Like especially peotry. Also I get drama kid vibes from him. (Also chemistry or health stuff bc potions)
Erik is in marching band. He plays clarinet. Probably in some kind of improv humor class.
Edd is in band too but he plays trumpet. But he's also a football player so time isnt something he has.
Edd and Erik on their senior year pull the best senior pranks.
Sam used to be in football but decided to drop it after one season. He likes home ecc because of cooking. Enviromental science was super easy for him. Also agriculture tech school (I think that's the term).
SIMON IS THAT ONE STUDENT THAT YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE SO MANY AP/HONORS CLASSES AND THREE EXTRACURICULARS AND A GREAT STABLE RELATIONSHIP?! HOW?!

COLLEGE AU Heads up this is based off of the school I am going to and also where I want to go. Close to the ocean, and also a private university. (This came out pretty long sorry for your dash I can’t find the keep reading thing)
Aquarius- Overachiever and triple major, chemistry, biology, and math. Runs a studyblr and tutors. Also somehow has time to dress up (whether it be feminine or masculine clothing, likes mixing things up) and brings iced coffee to every class due to barely ever getting sleep. Also is the pettiest towards Virgo and when she did ask for help once Aquarius said no, and she never says no to anyone. Vice president of black student union and rocks her Nigerian accent. Also on the volleyball team. Roommates with Ini.
Pi- Marine biologist major (cliche but... she loves animals and the sea!), Secretary of Gay Straight Alliance and President of the Pac Rim (pacific islander club). Dating Ces and cuddles with her during breaks to avoid doing homework. Trying to start a surfing team on her campus. Goes to class in pajamas and hair down unbrushed but doesn’t care, also comes late with her chai tea. However on weekends she dresses up all preppy to go take Ces to go eat and cram for a test she forgot about. Roommates with Tarus.
Ces- Chemistry major, treasurer of Gay Straight Alliance, and vice president of the drama club (she loves theater but is terrible at acting so... she does behind the scenes). Dating Pi who holds her during break as she does her homework. Ces is trying to start a club revolving body positivity (stop fat shaming her) and cannot procrastinate. She comes to class on time and tries to not spill her coffee as she runs through the campus. She always gets dressed but its always casual tank tops or t-shirts with pastel shorts. Roommates with Scorpio.
Aries- Engineering major, may not look it but he is really smart (in math at least, English though.... is a struggle), thick Irish accent, went there due to football scholarship and he is a lineman. Just does football and is in a Frat (although he tries to keep the other boys in check since he is a feminist). Is a regular with Aquarius since he needs a lot of help with English. Parities on the weekends and always wears his regular uniform, big t-shirt and basketball shorts with Nike sandals. Survives off of black coffee and the occasional shot. Not roommates with the other zodiacs.
Taurus- Kinesiology and psychology major, President of the Gay Straight Alliance, is trans and proud. Also apart of the Hispanic Union on campus but mainly focuses on GSA. Friends with Pi and Ces but doesn’t want to third wheel. Very very girly sense of fashion and always tries to at least do her makeup before class. Her coffee is sweeter than her soul. Very stressed about psychology but she has Gem to help her through it. Roommates with Pi.
Gem- Psychology major and trying to start a club based on indigenous pride. Participates a lot in protests. On the softball team and is their best pitcher. Sometimes she gets too focused on a task she forgets to do her homework so she rushes to get it all done. Runs an activist tumblr blog. Energy drinks are her go to since coffee or tea is too bitter for her. Wears lots of prints and experiments with feminine and masculine clothing. Roommates with Cancer.
Ini- Sociology major and history major. President of the history club. Very intimidating since she thinks logically before she attacks (verbally of course). Tried to join a sport but failed drastically. Spends a lot of time in the library studying and nags at her sister when she procrastinates. Runs a studyblr and follows Aquarius without knowing. Is a massive tea drinker but uses it more to help her sleep than keep her awake. Can run with three hours of sleep. Likes a black and white aesthetic with clothes and likes wearing jewlery from her culture (Navajo). Roommates with Aquarius.
Cancer- Art major, has bi polar disorder, part of the mental health wellness club (tried to get secretary for it but she didn’t feel up to it). Other zodiacs go to her to help make posters for their clubs and teams (which she does for payment now). Loves to drink tea, mainly green tea. Very introverted so she tends to shy away from others until they ask her about her art. That’s when she can go on and on about what she plans to do. Wants to make comics and is working on some drafts. Has two senses of fashion, paint splatter yoga pants with big t-shirts, or ripped skinny jeans and flowy tank tops. Her hair is always in a bun. Roommates with Gem.
Leo- Business major and is a lineman on the football team and coaches basketball part time to pay for his student loans. President of the Black Student Union and hangs out with Aquarius a lot, which makes Virgo his girlfriend mad. Tries to spend his free time with Virgo and is that couple that makes out in the corner that everyone hates. Dresses pretty well with button up shirts, jeans, and comfy loafers (told her looks like a dad). Loves his afro and told its “not professional” and replies “good thing I’m my own boss then.” Has a Starbucks credit card and everyone there knows what coffee he wants (only change is in autumn, he secretly loves pumpkin spice). Roommates with Sagittarius.
Virgo- Biology major trying to become a plastic surgeon. President of the fashion club, Hispanic union, and vice president of the Woman in STEM club. Never sleeps either. Dating Leo and is all over him whenever she gets the chance, also the kind of girl that texts him all day long. Runs off of hate, sweet coffee and whatever is left of the sweet bread she bought (ps best combo). College is already paid for her, very spoiled. Hates Aquarius and tries to avoid her as much as possible. Always wears dresses and skirts and loves floral prints. Roommates with Libra.
Libra- Criminal justice major and also doing pre law courses. Is in mock trial and is in Disabilities and Support Change club fighting against ableism. Blind and makes lots of blind jokes to see if people around her are uncomfortable. Loves fashion and often asks Virgo to help her find out what color things are. Typically wears cute pants and dressy tops. Takes her longer to do her work but it won’t stop her. Tea person but if there is coffee she’ll drink it. Roommates with Virgo.
Scorpio- Communications major, president of the Muslim Student Association. On the cross country team. Taking the max number of units at all times so focuses mainly on school when not doing clubs or sports. Snack drawer filled all the time since her brothers send her stuff. Very extroverted person and loves making friends with others. Is trying to help Gem start her club since she loves seeing people have pride in their cultures. Loves jackets and skirts and always makes her Hijab match, and loves makeup. Loves tea and carries teabags wherever she goes. Roommates with Ces.
Sagittarius- Agriculture animal science major and on the lacrosse team and trying to start show jumping (horse thing) on campus. He loves archery but didn’t make the team this year due to being sick on tryouts day. Is ace and doesn’t like how Leo brings Virgo into their room all the time, so he spends most of his time in the library or volunteering in animal shelters. Cowboy boots and flannels are his thing and doesn’t mind when someone calls him redneck. Very light skinned for being latino. Loves engergy drinks even though Leo offers him Starbucks he’ll always say no thanks. Roommates with Leo.
Capricorn- Philosophy major and does not like spending time in clubs. Often made fun of for either their Vitiligo or his heterochromia or for even just being gender fluid. Tried to join GSA but always forgot about the meetings so they just gave up on going. Hangs out with Taurus all the time and has tried to ask her out but she wasn’t ready for a relationship yet. Runs a meme blog on tumblr but rarely gets notes (Aquarius follows them later on and reblogs everything to make them happy). Fashion sense of course varies between masculine and feminine but loves grunge looks. Drinks five hour energy like a frat boy would with shots.

As the daughter of two teachers herself, this brings back a lot of memories. Thank you for this wonderful prompt! I had a lot of fun writing this!
SAKAMAKI
Shu: Shu is a lousy homeroom teacher much to Kazumi’s embarrassment, but as Ryoutei Academy’s orchestra class’s teacher, he is known for sending his students off to join highly respected universities, national orchestras, and competitions after high school. It’s when Shu becomes the maestro in the music room does his daughter realize his true love and talent for music.
Reiji: Reiji is a strict and meticulous chemistry teacher. The competition for good grades is high due to his infamous curve, which only allows 5 students to receive an A in his class. He’s picky with lab journals and formulas, and it forces Satomi to do well in her father’s class. He’s harsher on her and her assignments because he expects more from her than anyone else. It’s worth it in the end.
Ayato: Ayato is the physical education teacher and basketball coach of Ryoutei Academy. His students run laps every time they’re in class and Mizuki gets to hear them complain about it. When he forms the boys and girls basketball teams, Ayato surprisingly cuts his daughter from making the final team. Everyone’s shocked, but he tells her he only wants the best, forcing her to work harder.
Kanato: Kanato is the crazy but genius home economics teacher that everyone either fears or secretly admires. He demands perfection when his students create various desserts, and he grades them harshly for their mistakes. He’s not afraid to call out Yuuki for hers too. But thanks to his constant criticism, many of his students have gone off to culinary schools and earn success.
Laito: Laito is a philosophy teacher as well as the school’s piano accompanist. His students find his teachings deep and mysterious, and he’s pretty laid back when it comes to grading. Laito picks on Tsubaki a lot during class, much to her chagrin, and he likes to embarrass her too. Many of the choir kids love chatting with Laito though, and they always praise him for his talent. He likes his job a lot.
Subaru: Subaru is a mathematics teacher and the wrestling team’s coach. His students find his lessons easy to understand, and many high schoolers find him cool or attractive too. Hikari is lucky to have him help her at home for homework. When she wants to join the wrestling team, Subaru tells her no until she made a big deal about it at school and forced him to let her join the team.
MUKAMI
Ruki: Ruki is a top-notch history teacher who is strict with his students. No one misbehaves in his class. As Fuyumi’s teacher, he expects her to know many historical facts and events, and he holds pop quizzes at random. Students complain that he’s difficult, but in reality, he weeds out the lazy students first and relaxes on the ones willing to work hard in his class later in the semester.
Kou: Kou is the choir teacher and dance team’s coach. His skills as an idol pay off when he teaches his students, and they always win 1st place at competitions. As the dance team’s coach, Kou makes sure his girls are fit and pushed to the core. Natsume is the captain of the team, and Kou makes her demonstrate everything. He also makes other dance teachers of other schools jealous of him.
Yuma: Yuma is the agricultural and mechanics teacher. He teaches his students how to build things out of metals, raise crops, and take care of animals. He tries his best to impress his daughter, Haruka, but she’s already proud of what he does. Yuma’s students really like him as a teacher, and it’s evident at the end of the school year when he receives thank you notes and gifts from them.
Azusa: Azusa is the school’s favorite art teacher. He encourages his students to do as they please with their art, and he is very patient and understanding. His class is Akiko’s favorite class because students can listen to their music and create works of art at their own pace. It wouldn’t be surprising that Azusa wins the “Teacher of the Year” Award at the end of the year ceremony. Students love him!

a/n: @inkwells-writing: My AP World History teacher was a loveable asshole and my AP Chemistry teacher was a dork so have this. I’m sorry this didn’t satisfy your toe kink... :(
Arthur woke to the impending doom that was a stack of essays on his nightstand table. The throbbing pain in his temples told him that no, he had not fallen asleep grading them like a good teacher, but had instead obliged to the whims of his coworkers and tossed back a couple of drinks until he’d forgotten his last name. Kirk-something was it?
Arthur turned his gaze toward the conveniently formatted papers, in which, underneath the writer’s name was consistently printed a Mr. Arthur Kirkland.
Kirkland, yes, of course. He blinked his groggy eyes.
There was no harm in letting go once in awhile, yes? It wasn’t often that he’d let himself go to this extent, but it had happened and that was that. No need to go back and lament. Besides, another day behind on reading and he might get the raw satisfaction of making his students wait longer for their grade. Oh, he loved to feel evil, Arthur felt a smile tug on his lips despite the parched, dry state of his throat.
It was easy to blame teachers when grades came in late, Arthur even remembered cursing some of his own to hell and back, but oh boy. Being one was so much different. Torturing his students was as fun as his job got, and if it was another excuse to go out and party like he wouldn’t end up breaking a hip, he would take it.
All in good-natured fun, of course.
He sat up, rubbing at his eyes, blinking to find himself surprisingly unclothed.
It didn’t faze him. One would expect him to… empty the contents of his stomach after, maybe, the fourth drink, naturally. Even his piss-drunk-est self wouldn’t let him sleep in soiled clothes.
His vision blurred for a painful bit before he hissed aloud and held his head in his hands. “Damn.”
“I know a good family recipe for hangovers that I think would be of service to you!”
“I definitely need that service,” Arthur replied with a chuckle, letting himself be pulled into a warm, comforting embrace, fingers under his chin tilting his head up as lips peppered his forehead in kisses.
Oh, the way those arms wrapped around his bare waist, pulling him to a strong, sturdy chest, to hell with the hangover, with those essays. They could wait another few hours, it was hardly ever he got time for himself to enjoy, responsibility-free, stress-free-
Stress-free only to the extent of which those green eyes of his blinked open, wide as saucers, because he hadn't been in a relationship in what felt like forever.
So who was in his bed?
Arthur used every last bit of strength in his arms to push the man far away, holding the bedsheets to his chest like a vice, “Who the hell are you, mate?”
The look he got in response wasn't like something you would expect from a stranger in bed. The man tilted his head, confused. He shifted to prop an elbow up, chin resting in the palm of his hand. “Are you alright?”
Arthur held his breath. “Uh-”
The man turned to the nightstand, slipped a pair of glasses onto the bridge of his nose and Arthur felt every drop of energy drip out of his system. His sheets dropped back down to pool at his waist.
“Mr. Jones?”
“I think at this point, you can call me Alfred.” Mr. Jones said with a dreamy smile, propelling himself forward to no doubt plant another kiss wherever was closest on Arthur’s skin.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Arthur found himself jerking backward, “What- wh, why are you in my…”
“You don't remember?”
It was a silly question to ask. Taking into consideration of their lack of clothes, of the hangover wracking Arthur's skull, of the fact that they'd woken up in the same bed- Arthur was no Sherlock Holmes but he was pretty damn sure what had happened and he wished with every cell in his body that it hadn't.
Because this man taught the class directly across from him, and Mondays were already hell, but now, to walk into school and see a man he’d spent the night with, to see that face every single day?
Arthur crossed his arms. “Mr. Jones, you need to leave. Now.”
“I-” Mr. Jones sat up and those sheets fell away from his shoulders, making it extremely difficult for Arthur to be stern.
No matter how badly behaved his students were, Arthur could always relentlessly crack the whip. But they had never been naked in his bed, and they had never been built like a tank, with biceps, or triceps, or numerous other -ceps that seemed to come out of nowhere. Arthur had definitely never seen them behind those button-down shirts Mr. Jones would wear to work.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“No, Mr. Jones-” A furrow of those brows framing those sad, sad blue eyes and Arthur cleared his throat, hand pressing reassuringly against a pectoral before him.
And for other reasons too, of course- “Alfred, I just-”
Oh, that face. The same expression that fell across those features when Alfred caught one of his students cheating on an exam- he was, by many and all definitions, a more empathetic teacher than Arthur could even try to be.
Arthur would watch him as he flitted around his class, blue eyes sparkling with wonder at the thought of being surrounded by atoms, that the whole world’s workings divided down into the subject he so lovingly taught.
“Chemistry!” He would say, loud enough to catch Arthur’s attention as he watched his class silently take a quiz. “You guys, chemistry is everything!”
And Arthur would grumble, resting his chin in his hands because history was quite literally everything as well, yet his students never got hyped up about hunter-gatherer societies undergoing the agricultural revolution.
What was Alfred’s secret? Arthur had always wanted to ask, hell, he vaguely remembered doing so last night- slurring over the rim of his umpteenth drink wondering aloud how anyone could make Coulomb’s Law as interesting as Alfred did. So interesting that Arthur himself would pause his teaching on many an occasion to listen in on Alfred’s lectures, after which he would shut the door and resume with a scowl.
Needless to say, Arthur didn’t remember Alfred’s answer.
“I have quite a few essays to grade that I would be better off doing in an empty house. To avoid distraction, that is.”
Alfred broke out into a grin, “I know you like to hold off grading those!”
Damn. What else had he told him last night?
“If I hold off any longer, I think I might warrant angry letters from parents,” Arthur said with a nervous chuckle, shifting to the far edge of the bed.
Alfred shifted with him and peeked over at the nightstand, crinkling his nose. “The dates on those look fairly recent.”
He then turned back to Arthur with a sunny smile. “Maybe you had them confused?”
“Yes, it’s possible I- oh.”
Alfred had climbed on him. Yes, literally, like a dog craving attention, he had hoisted himself quite literally to hover above Arthur, smirk pushing a dimple into his cheek. “So what say you about a round two?”
“I think I have another set of essays somewhere in the back to, um-”
“God, you make me so hot,” Lips were at Arthur’s ear and green eyes fluttered wide open. “Heh- I guess you could say, you’re quite the exothermic reaction.”
“My parents are coming over in half an hour!”
Alfred paused, expression mimicking the faux-panic on Arthur’s features. “What?”
“Yes, my parents, they-” Arthur sat up straight, hands coaxing Alfred’s warm body off of him- somewhere, anywhere, God, just somewhere that was not above him. “They want to see what I’ve done with the place.”
“You should’ve led with that.” Alfred said naively, blinking as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, “Gosh, I’d better leave then.”
“Yeah.” Arthur nodded, and damn he was either one good actor or Alfred was just one gullible man. Something told him it was the latter.
Alfred slipped out of bed to hunt for his clothes and Arthur fought the urge to look.
“Say, why don’t you put your number in my phone and I could call you sometime tomorrow?”
Arthur would not be doing that. “Er- yes, of course.”
A man like Alfred- if he were already this attached after one night, Arthur could just imagine how it would be after a date. To top it off, they were coworkers, it wasn’t ethical!
Besides, Alfred could do better than a shifty man like him whose nightmares were commitment itself.
“Phone’s next to your essays. The password is 1776.”
Arthur couldn’t help the smile working its way onto his face. How predictable... He then went back to frowning, feigning the action of plugging his number into Alfred’s phone.
It was for their own good! They weren’t compatible, it wouldn’t work, and this was the only way to ensure their careers would be unaffected by the disaster that would ensue when two very different types of people decided to date.
“I guess I’ll leave then.”
Alfred put on his clothes and Arthur remembered why he’d been so eager to bed him in the first place, drunk or not.
Mr. Jones was a stud.
“And I guess you’ll call me by tomorrow.” Arthur said with a laugh, burrowing under his sheets, “With the number I put in… on your phone.”
“That’s the plan,” Alfred said with a wink and he was gone. Out the front door, with a phone that didn’t have Arthur’s number on it, dropping a two-ton weight on Arthur’s chest as the door clicked shut.
He slipped on his underwear and a pair of reading glasses, deciding to grade an essay before freshening up. It was unfair, truly, to the student who wrote it because Arthur was not in a very forgiving mood.
Nor was he usually ever, but even more so today- Like he always tended to be after trying situations such as these, not that they were quite common either.
He tended to be quite different in class.
Arthur was a man of a gentleman demeanor. One that could lock up any feelings that conflicted with his normal behavior behind it, feelings such as those that would be brought about by a particularly annoying member in his class, or someone telling him they didn’t remember the homework assignment had ever been given.
In those cases, he would keep a straight face and deliver a proper punishment. Not one tinge of red in his cheeks, not one word that hadn’t already been rehearsed in his head minutes before the conversation.
And it had been that way until the fateful day Mr. Jones had begun to work in their school.
He brought with him leagues of distracted students. Girls who spent more time admiring him through the windows of Arthur’s class, taking discreet pictures as if Arthur wouldn’t catch them and force them to move seats far away from the window view.
He did.
It was all so confusing, how childish little teenagers would throw away perfectly good education, perfectly good opportunities to get A’s on every single exam he’d administer, just to gawk at a man who would never give them a second glance.
“Could I borrow a marker? Mine is dry.” Had been the first thing Alfred had said to him though, and forget everything Arthur had just said, because he was gawking. Stuttering for the first time.
“Um, I-” Exposed. Arthur had paused in his movements pacing back and forth the classroom, as he usually did when he lectured. His hands had fumbled on his desk, “What color?”
“Any color you can spare!” Mr. Jones had said with a dazzling smile and Arthur needed to sit.
“Is green alright?”
“Green!” Alfred had taken it from his hands, leaving Arthur nearly shuddering at the touch of those warm, rough fingertips. “Green is perfect! Beautiful.”
And Arthur knew Alfred couldn’t possibly be talking about Arthur’s eyes, or the sweater Arthur had been wearing that day, but it felt like it and Arthur had to sit right down, turning to scowl at his snickering students upon Alfred’s leave.
“I hope you find it funny when I give you a pop quiz right this instant!”
So of course when Francis, the French teacher down the hall, had asked him out for drinks, promising with twinkling eyes that Alfred would be there as well, Arthur had foolishly gone, pretending it was due to a stressful week. Pretending it was due to anything that wasn’t wanting to see Alfred outside of school.
Despite the fact that Alfred had proposed sharing a lunch break the day he returned the green marker, and despite the fact that Arthur rejected not only that offer, but many others that had manifested themselves, he simply had to go get those drinks. For some bloody reason, Arthur was drawn to him, yet at the same time repelling like the wrong end of the magnet nearing another.
He thought about it all weekend, leading to the moment he’d walked right back into school on Monday, a bit late, seeing as the first bell had already rung before he’d walked into class.
He set his bag down behind his desk. “You’ve got a pop quiz on chapter eleven. Prepare as much as you can before I can get out your graded essays.”
The chorus of groans only served to quirk the corner of his mouth up in a sly smile. “And it’s not curved.”
“Mr. Kirkland!”
Arthur had taken a little longer than he would’ve to set the essays on his desk, but when he did, a timer was set and a relatively simple yet lengthy quiz was passed out, giving him a bit of time to leisurely grade the one or two essays left to grade.
He couldn’t fully focus the whole weekend. Not when small tidbits of Friday night came back to him every now and then, putting a nasty red on his cheeks, forcing him to take a break and… once in awhile, relieve the tension they brought him. He was only human!
Which is why he averted his eyes as he unwittingly caught the blue-eyed gaze of the teacher across the hallway, who’d stopped midway in his lesson to cast a rather sad look in Arthur’s direction.
Arthur chewed the inside of his cheek.
“Now if you guys will get to work on your labs, I’ll be right back!” He heard Alfred say and he practically buried himself in the essay in front of him, pretending to be occupied, nonchalant, indifferent, all at once, all to keep Alfred from walking to the threshold of Arthur’s classroom and knocking gently against the wooden door.
Which he did anyway.
“Hey, Mr. Kirkland, can I see you for a second? I’m having problems with my computer.”
“You should ask Mr. Honda in the math hall, he’s far better at technology than I am,” Arthur responded all too quickly, flipping to the next page in the essay and marking a word with a red pen. “Besides, my class is taking a quiz right now, I can’t leave them, sorry.”
Those blue eyes dimmed down even further and Arthur didn’t know Alfred could own an expression so distraught.
And it was all Arthur’s fault.
“Alright, thanks anyway.”
“Yeah, good luck with your computer, mate.”
Arthur was a horrible, horrible person.
He didn’t believe it when he gave out multiple choice quizzes where all the answers were B, he didn’t believe it when he took fifty points off an essay for botched formatting, yet with that look on Alfred’s face, Arthur was ready to have the insult tattooed on his forehead. He deserved it. He was a grade-A ass.
One that couldn’t bring himself to tell Alfred he wasn’t interested, even though he so clearly was. One that couldn’t bring himself to ask Alfred to leave him alone even though it was the last thing Arthur wanted.
Arthur was a mess and Alfred had caught himself in the crossfire.
The dismissal bell rang faster than Arthur would’ve liked, despite the school having a block schedule, and he watched as his students left the room, leaving quizzes at his desk and picking up unsatisfactory essay grades on their way out.
“You know, Arthur-”
A startled jump and Arthur bit his lip, eyeing the surface of his desk as his fingers fumbled with the fabric of his sweater.
Alfred had walked in during Arthur’s free period and there was no excuse coming to Arthur’s mind, not one that would save him from this, frankly inevitable, confrontation.
“The oxygen in the water molecule has two lone pairs of electrons, and electrons always repel each other.”
Arthur pretended he knew that information.
“They push the hydrogen molecules toward each other, and despite one hydrogen desperately wanting to get as far away as possible from the other one, they’re forced together by the lone pairs pushing them down.”
Alfred touched Arthur’s shoulder and Arthur recoiled, just slightly.
“There doesn’t have to be those two lone pairs for us.”
Despite the unnecessary chemistry analogy, Arthur got it. There was no need to be pushed together if Arthur wanted to get as far away as possible. A far-fetched comparison, but he got it.
“Well, I mean, if there weren’t two lone pairs on the oxygen we’d all be nonexistent.”
Arthur glanced up to find Alfred rather flustered. “Not! Not that I’m saying we have to be together for the sake of the human race or anything, er- it was a bad analogy, but if you don’t want me to bug you just let me know.”
A man of admirable quality. Arthur cleared his throat. “Friday night was a mistake I’d never intended to make- I hadn’t been fully conscious.”
“Me neither!” Alfred blurted, “Or else I wouldn’t have let it happen, I mean, because you couldn’t consent. Not that I... didn’t want it to happen.”
“I don’t think it, um, we should be more than that. A mistake.”
“Okay.” Was Alfred’s response, punctuated with a light smile. It was enough closure for Arthur to have gotten back to his work and for Alfred to have gotten back to his, yet for some odd reason, Arthur couldn’t stop.
It was as if he was convincing himself. “I mean, we’re co-workers, what if something went wrong and we brought our feelings into the workplace?”
“Well, if we fought, I think you’d be able to handle it pretty fine, you never seem to lose your cool.” Alfred remarked, “And me? You never gave me your number and despite that, I think I handled my class today just fine.”
Arthur swallowed around the lump in his throat. “There would be rumors.”
“The rumors would be true.” Alfred said with a shrug, “Besides, it’s not like we’d parade it around school. If they ask, we don’t have to tell.”
“We can’t date, though,” Arthur muttered, fists clenched atop the surface of his desk. “We just can’t, I’m sorry.”
“And that’s okay, it’s what I came here to say, don’t feel pressured to comply with what I want,” Alfred said with a grin, and Arthur really could’ve left it at that. Alfred seemed to carry himself well, he would be fine, and everything would be back to normal, but he just… couldn’t.
“Although, I find myself craving a sandwich from that coffee house near the supermarket. It really is quite good.”
“I’ll have to try it out,” Alfred said, and Arthur glanced up to find him plucking a pen from his pocket, scribbling a note onto his wrist to which Arthur had to force himself not to chide him for the habit.
One couldn’t reveal their true colors so quickly.
“I think I’ll be there, what, this evening? Around seven?”
Alfred stilled his motion, clicking his pen so that the point receded back into its shell.
“If you happen to be there around the same time, I can’t do anything about it.”
“Nothing more than a coincidence,” Alfred said with a smile, and Arthur dared not smile back, lest a student saw and discovered that he was not just a shell of a human with not a single emotion inside, as he tended to quite frequently appear.
After all, there would be plenty of smiling in the numerous other coincidences to come.

An Alpha Omega: Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Vanessa stepped into Organic Chemistry and immediately beelined for the Omega shaking in the front row. Their heat scent wasn’t too powerful, but it was still strong enough for Vanessa to know it was there. She sat down beside the smaller woman and smiled reassuringly at her as she did her best to block the view of the leering Alphas from the other Omega.
“Hey,” she greeted. “You live on my floor, don’t you?”
“I think so?” the woman swallowed. “You’re roommates with the golden haired boy?”
The woman’s accent was thick, but still easy enough to understand. She liked it and found it amusing that Jack was best known for his hair. She needed to convince him to dye it blue or something, just to fuck with everyone. It would be hilarious; he had the hair for wild colours anyways. It didn’t get better than blond.
“Vanessa McCree,” she said as she offered her hand.
“Mei-ling Zhou,” the woman smiled. “Thank you for breaking their line of sight.”
“Figured you needed a hand,” Vanessa chuckled as they shook hands. “Like a bunch-a vultures this lot is.”
“Are all Americans this aggressive?” Mei asked.
“They ain’t like that in...uh, yer Chinese, eh?” Vanessa cocked an eyebrow.
“Yes,” Mei smiled. “And they are assertive but not...like this.”
“It is overkill,” Vanessa agreed as she leaned back in her chair and lounged. She would have kicked her boots up onto the desk if she had no manners. Alas, she did, so her boots stayed on the ground. “Must be nice to be able to walk around and not get sized up like a rack-a ribs.”
“A what?” Mei blinked.
“Uh, piece of meat,” Vanessa tried instead.
“Oh, yes, it is nice,” Mei smiled. “Sorry, I’m not good with my English phrases yet.”
“Honey, you can get as good as they get with phrases and us Southerners will still leave you wonderin’ what the fuck we’re talkin’ about,” Vanessa laughed. “We got a dialect all our own.”
“I can tell,” Mei giggled. “I apologize if I ask you to repeat something. Your accent is strange to me.”
“No worries,” Vanessa shrugged. “You just worry about takin’ notes. I’ll keep the hounds off ya.”
Mei smiled at her before she set her books out straight on her desk. Vanessa leaned back in her seat and snorted softly. At least Mei’s heat scent wasn’t overpowering. It was noticeable, sure, but it didn’t dig at the brain demanding attention. She wished hers was like that; everyone knew when she was in heat and they always drooled like dogs when she walked into a room. It was annoying and uncomfortable and really, she blamed her father for this.
“Hey,” a girl leaned forward towards Mei. “Name’s….”
“Piss off,” Vanessa growled as she leaned over. “We ain’t here fer you to flirt. We’re here to learn. So sit down and leave my girl alone.”
“Your...you’re mates?” the woman stared at her like she had three heads.
What? Where the hell did she get that idea? Nothing Vanessa had just said would have implied that. She was clearly just friends with Mei. She would have rolled with it no problem, though, if Mei wasn’t staring at her in terror.
“I didn’t say that,” Vanessa rolled her eyes. “We’re friends. You never call yer friends ‘yer boy’ or ‘yer girl’?”
“No; that’s weird,” the woman frowned.
“Different strokes fer different folks; now leave us alone,” Vanessa said as she turned to face the whiteboard as the professor got her slide show set up.
The Alpha sat back down without a word and the professor started gushing about the wonders of organic chemistry. Vanessa settled in her seat, listening to the professor talk and taking quick notes about important dates in the year. If all of her lectures were going to be like this, Vanessa was looking forward to them.
The woman was just full of energy. Her eyes were sparkling and she seemed to be vibrating across the floor. It was adorable and intriguing to watch. She must have had some powerful scent blockers on too because Vanessa couldn’t catch much of anything coming from the woman. It was a nice change to the overpowering stench that filled the room.
“I know that you’ll all do...is there a problem, sir?” the professor suddenly glared up at the stands.
“Sorry,” someone called. “That Omega’s scent is distracting.”
“You can barely smell it, asshole,” Vanessa shouted. “Yer just lookin’ fer an excuse to blame the Omega. As per usual, you fuckin’ slacker.”
“I can leave,” Mei whispered as she started reaching for her stuff.
“No, it’s fine, Mei-ling,” Vanessa soothed as she rested a hand on her shoulder. “You have every right to be here. His problems are his own. Just ignore him.”
“She’s quite right,” the professor snorted as she set her hands on her hips. “Anyone else having a problem with the scent of an Omega going through heat can leave the premises. They aren’t doing anything to disrupt you other than existing and that’s no reason to bar them from learning.” She shrugged a shoulder. “Besides, I’m in rut and you don’t see me slobbering all over the poor dear. Hell, I’ve had the misfortune of accidentally sending my entire third year organic chemistry class into early heats and we still carried on our lecture with only one person accidentally getting a stiffy. So don’t sit there and tell me one little Omega sitting five rows ahead of you is distracting you when I can barely smell anything.”
“You go girl!” Vanessa crowed.
The professor gave a quick bow before straightening up. “So, if we’re done being extra, let’s get into the lesson. The definition of organic chemistry is….”
“Same spot, huh?”
“Yah,” Jack smiled up at the Alpha as they took a seat beside him. “Creature of habit.”
“Nothing wrong with that,” the Alpha smiled at him.
Dear God, he hoped he could get the Alpha to keep smiling. It was the most beautiful smile he’d ever seen in his life. He didn’t want to see anything other than a smile on the man’s face for as long as he lived.
“I’m Jack, by the way,” Jack said. “Jack Morrison. I didn’t get to introduce myself the other day.”
“Gabriel Reyes,” the Alpha smiled and offered his hand.
Now that was a beautiful name made all the better by the beautiful shift into another language. Jack wanted to melt on the spot. Please, keep speaking that beautiful language, good sir.
“Spanish, right?” he asked.
“Sí,” Gabriel chuckled. “Nice ear.”
Jack smiled, fighting back the blush he felt sweeping over his face. Now was not the time to be embarrassed, body! You had to be smooth and suave to appear as more than a belly-exposing Omega! Quick, ask him what he’s taking! That’ll be thought provoking.
“So, you’re taking Agricultural Sciences?” he asked.
“No,” Gabriel tipped his head to the side. “General sciences.”
“Oh, cool,” Jack laughed. “Keeps the employment opportunities open.”
“It does,” Gabriel agreed. “You want to be a farmer or something?”
“Sort of,” Jack shrugged. “I think having a scientific background and understanding what chemicals can harm or benefit crops is incredibly useful in the field.”
“You couldn’t take something at a community college for that?” Gabriel asked.
Jack let out a fake gasp and pressed a hand against his chest. “Rude!”
“You know what I meant,” Gabriel laughed.
Jack grinned and shrugged. “Just making sure,” he laughed. “You enjoy chemistry?”
“I’m terrible at it, actually,” Gabriel admitted. “I can get by but that’s really not a good thing.”
“I can help tutor you,” Jack offered. “Chemistry’s one of my best subjects.”
“That would be fantastic,” Gabriel grinned. “Here, I’ll put your number into my phone for when I’m doing homework and need some help.”
“Sure that’ll,” he started to say before he froze.
Wait a minute. That was way too easy. He narrowed his eyes and Gabriel blinked at him. Was this a plow, good sir? He will not stand for this!
“Are you really bad at chem or you just saying that to get my number?” he growled.
Gabriel blinked before his eyes widened. “Holy shit, that would have been ingenious,” he whispered.
Jack let out a bark of laughter before he scribbled his number down on the corner of his notebook and pushed it towards Gabriel. Gabriel wrote his number underneath, carefully forming each digit so that it was easy to read.
“My fours and nines tend to look alike,” Gabriel admitted as he typed in Jack’s name and number. “There. All stored away for when I’m looking at my notes wondering what the fuck I wrote.”
Jack laughed as he slipped his phone into his backpack and waited for the professor to start talking at the front of the room. He had Gabriel’s number. He had Gabriel’s number sitting in his phone just waiting to be called or texted. He should not have been this excited over something like this.
“So a trans molecule is changing form?”
“No,” Jack said. “The carbon atom we’re using to name the molecule has changed direction.”
“Oh,” Gabriel frowned. He shifted his phone to his other ear and scribbled on his notes. “You know, this would be easier if you were here with me.”
“Yah, ‘cept I’d be dead as soon as I got within a foot of your dorm building,” Jack said.
Gabriel could almost hear the grimace in his voice. Jack wouldn’t be dead, but he might wish he was with the way the other Alphas swarmed. They even did that to the claimed Omegas and they were there visiting their mates and had every right to be there. It was a really big slap to the face for everything he’d been taught.
How could these people stand to be around themselves when they were so fucking disrespectful?
“Well, we could meet up at the library,” Gabriel offered. “Hear the second floor by the far shelves is quiet this time of day.”
“Library?” Jack asked. “Yah, I can meet you there. Just let me tell my roommate what’s up. You know; in case I get jumped.”
“No problem,” Gabriel smiled. “I’ll meet you there.”
They hung up and Gabriel put his book and notes in his backpack. It was only the second week of classes and already he was lost in chemistry. It wasn’t even that complicated, he knew that, but he’d look at what he’d written after class and it was like there was a swarm of question marks bouncing on his head.
Thank Chris he had Jack there to help him. The man had a gift for chemistry. Even when the rest of the class was staring at the teacher like he had three heads, Jack understood it all. It was nice to know that at least someone understood what the fuck was going on.
“Where you off to?” Gregory asked as he tipped a pop can towards his lips.
“Library,” Gabriel replied. “Getting a classmate to help me with something.”
“Ooh, that pretty Omega you have the hots for?” Gregory grinned. “Can I come with?”
“No,” Gabriel glared at him. “Don’t you have your own stuff to study?”
“Come on; I want to meet your future doll,” Gregory laughed.
“No,” Gabriel repeated. “I’m not having you creep him out. You’re way too...forward for someone like him.”
“What, you don’t want me flirting with him for you?” Gregory laughed. “Come on, bro!”
“Go study somewhere else,” Gabriel rolled his eyes before he headed for the stairs.
Like he wanted someone like Gregory around Jack. Gregory would probably scare him off with the way he talked. Or, worse, Jack might try to kill the other Alpha. He did not want to break up a fight between a startled Alpha and a murderous Omega.
He headed across campus towards the library, trying to keep the spring out of his step. He hadn’t had a chance to have time alone with Jack and he was looking forward to this. He’d wanted to ask Jack on a proper date, but he didn’t have the guts to. Something about Jack just screamed ‘I’m way too good for you, but it’s cute that you think you can talk to me’. Not that he was arrogant; he was just that amazing and Gabriel did not know how to handle that.
He was used to Omegas throwing themselves at him, whether playfully or seriously. He secretly loved it; he spent so many years worrying that he wasn’t going to be anywhere near as amazing as his sisters, only to hit high school and be considered the most eligible bachelor on campus. It was a nice feeling to have, knowing that he hit so many ‘potential mate’ checkboxes for so many different Omegas. Jack, however, was different.
He could tell Jack liked him, but he was keeping himself schooled. It wasn’t a state he was used to seeing in Omegas. They were almost always keeping their heads low, smiling nervously even when he made it clear he wasn’t a threat. Not Jack. Jack’s smiles were confident, his head was high, and the nervousness came from the same place that Gabriel’s did. It was a little disorienting, but Gabriel loved it.
He headed up to the second floor of the library and got an empty table far from the other students. Jack showed up a few minutes later, smiling as he sat down. He looked amazing and he smelt even better. Gabriel wanted nothing more than to ruffle Jack’s golden hair until he got the other man to moan happily at the release of endorphins.
“Hey,” he greeted. “So, about those trans molecules.”
Jack smiled as he opened his own notes and started explaining everything to him. Gabriel leaned in close to look at the diagrams and got a full whiff of Jack’s scent. Peppermint and winter-fresh danced across his brain and he lost his train of thought. He wanted to bury his nose in Jack’s neck and scent him, chasing that beautiful smell as far as it could go. He shook his head slowly before he pulled away.
“Problem?” Jack asked.
“I...okay, this is going to sound bad, but can I scent you?” he asked.
Jack’s eyes widened and a wonderful blush spread across his farmboy freckles. He wanted to cover each one in kisses, nuzzling that beautiful pale flesh until Jack begged for mercy. He was adorable and he needed to know that.
“Um, why?” Jack asked.
“Your scent’s making my brain go crazy,” Gabriel chuckled. “It can’t figure out which is your scent and which is your cologne. It’s driving me up a wall.”
Jack shook his head before he narrowed his eyes playfully. At least, Gabriel hoped that was a playful glare. If it wasn’t, he was going to be in for some deep shit.
“Okay,” he said. “On the condition that I can scent you too.”
Gabriel almost tap-danced in delight. Jack wanted to scent him too! That was the best news he’d ever heard!
“Sure thing,” Gabriel smirked.
He leaned in close and buried his nose in the hair just behind Jack’s ear. He inhaled slowly, drawing the sharp scent of peppermint and winter-fresh into his nose. He opened his mouth a little, letting the scent drag over his hard palate. He brushed his nose back from Jack’s ear, letting the golden strands tickle his nose. They were so soft and smelt faintly of clean soap shampoo.
“Mmm,” he purred as he continued breathing. “So the peppermint is you.”

“Winter-fresh, bit of soap,” Gabriel murmured. “Touch of strawberry. It’s nice. You?”
“Cinnamon,” Jack murmured. “Bit of ginger, chocolate. Um, a type of Old Spice I’m not familiar with.”
“Swagger Red,” Gabriel chuckled as he slowly pulled away. “It’s my favourite.”
“I like it,” Jack said as he pulled away. “Your brain working again, Gabriel?”
“For now,” Gabriel smirked. “Might need to scent you again.”
“Next one will cost you,” Jack warned. “Now, as I was saying.”
Gabriel did his best to focus on the lesson, but he kept wanting to drag his nose against Jack’s cheek. He smelt so good; how had he not buried his face in that beautiful hair already? He sat beside him in class and he spent the entire time smelling peppermint and winter-fresh; how had he not just thrown all civility to the wind and buried his face in that soft golden hair? He had better control than he thought. His Momma would be so proud.

Most students think he’s a really calm person b/c of his demeanor but if he ever catches anyone going off campus without permission or anything people will know not to mess with him lmao
Maybe Doug and Deldro would be extra curricular teachers or maybe they’re just students who happen to be in every class together for some reason lol
Klaus would be teaching biology or if there was an agricultural class, then maybe that.
He’d be the supervisor of the gardening club at school!
His students would find him a bit intimidating at first, and none would dare try anything to make him angry. Soon they actually see that he’s just a nice guy, but they don’t try any pranks to provoke him at all since they don’t want to risk it lmao
His classroom would be have multiple plants inside, all of them being real. Once in a while a some of the flowers bloom, especially during spring. Everyone helps out with watering the plants, and I feel like most will be pretty amazed when the flowers bloom for the first time
Is always there to help any of his students with homework or studying, and overall he’s a great tutor to any student
If he ever does a test review the day before the test in a jepardy style, he’ll award the winner some candy and like 5 bonus points on the test
Steven would be teaching chemistry, and other science subjects as well
Steven is a pretty chill teacher, but he’d be a bit strict as well. In a good way though
If he were to teach astrology though… oh boy man. So many puns on his last name lmao. I can also see him teaching history as well
Is also that one attractive teacher in the entire school
He’d be a pretty supportive teacher as well too, encouraging his students to do well and not cheat (puts emphasis on that last part)
Every year Steven gets this one student who doesn’t listen at all, as in being troublemaker and not listening to him when he’s speaking. Would calmly ask the student to listen to him, or face the consequences. And he does this pretty scarily, mostly scaring everyone into submission and everyone knowing that they shouldn’t mess with him or else something would happen
If any of his students try to cheat or anything, he knows. He’s got a good eye, so any students caught cheating are pretty much dead

I imagine if he had a troublesome or snarky student in class, he’ll just sigh, walk up, talk to them, and then give them extra homework or something to work on because of their attitude

Sometimes Steven just might be so tired by the end of the day that his last class will be lucky to have the last 30 minutes or so free, so they’ll have time to do homework. Steven just sleeps and relaxes during that time
Kahoot is a battlefield, with Steven giving first place winner 10 or 5 bonus points on a test. However, the questions on it are hard, so it makes the competition even more intense, with everyone studying before the day kahoot is going to be done
Okay but like if Steven had an observer in the room one day, he’ll pretty much be giving everyone this look like he did in the ova saying “don’t be rude don’t be rude-” Observer is probably impressed by how well Steven teaches and how everyone behaves aha
K.K might be a history teacher, since I have the feeling she’ll hate doing literature or English. I can also see her being an extra curricular teacher and teaching p.e or being the coach of a sports team for the school
That one teacher who if you ask about her son(s) she’ll just talk on and on about her kids aha
Will be a good teacher, but then she’ll be a kind of good strict (and also a bit of a scary) teacher
Nobody wants to deal with K.K when she’s angry, or especially if she’s angry at the whole class (minus the ones who always do what they’re supposed to)

Abrams is the pretty eccentric teacher in school, and pretty much everyone enjoys his classes. I feel like he’d be a pretty cool history teacher aha
Over the summer Abrams would maybe go somewhere like a different country each year, and slowly over time he attains many different trinkets and all to show off to his classes. Sometimes he’ll joke around and say one of the things he got is cursed or whatever (no one knows if he’s joking or not since he actually looks like he’s serious though lmao
Abrams would probably have one of the most fun classes, with all sorts of activities and Abrams telling some stories from his travels. Most students are amazed at most of them, with Abrams mostly exaggerating a bit haha

Leonardo is a good student, getting good grades and all. He’d be trying hard to get good grades and is pretty much one of the good students in the classroom
Zapp is his somehow friend when he enters high school, and he wonders why he’s even friends with him sometimes. Sometimes Leo has to tutor him on how to do somethings in a specific subject

His notes would be both neat and have some sort of organized chaos, but he pretty much writes down everything during lessons since he’s afraid anything that the teacher has up on the board will be on the test
During finals and exam weeks he’s dead inside. All he wants to do is rest and sleep
All nighters are done frequently with tests and all the next day

Pucks smack the boards as Tampa Bay Lightning hockey players skate across the ice in Amalie Arena â Bukerâs office â and weâre chatting about his degree in information sciences.
Itâs a versatile major that combines programming, software, IT and data analysis â and happens to be the best degree in America right now, according to a Penny Hoarder analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.
We looked at the pay for recent graduates â and all graduates for 172 college degrees â Â and how income for those with these majors has changed between 2013 and 2017. The top two best-paying degrees are both under the âinformationâ umbrella, showing just how the rise of big data is shaping the job field for recent graduates.
Consider your doctorâs office, said University of South Florida School of Information instructor John Sullivan, where thousands of records (data) are generated every week. In the past, these records were stored in file cabinets or on open shelves.
Now, theyâre stored in electronic databases, which can streamline patient intake, appointment scheduling and the check-in process, making what was an annoying situation better for patients and staff.
An information sciences or studies degree will give a graduate the tools to create the systems that organize those types of records electronically. This major also includes a track to manage that new electronic database.
Lots of Options With an Information Science Background
Buker, who has worked with an independent video game company in addition to a professional hockey team, graduated from the School of Information two years ago.

And heâs not worried about the future of machine learning and artificial intelligenceâs impact on the world of programming â the idea of coders coding themselves out of the job.
âWeâve had programmers in this world going back to the 1950s, and we have programmers now,â Sullivan said.
Buker is just happy to be working in his dream job, which he said could not have been possible without an information science program.
âItâs a perfect program for entrepreneurial-spirited students who can take what they learn in class and apply it in ways never put in a textbook,â he said.

For this project, we used U.S. Census microdata from the 2013 and 2017 American Community Survey. (The latter was released in October). We created two groups: all full-time, year-round workers and just those who are under 30 years old.
We focused on 172 college majors, from accounting to zoology. We excluded some degrees, such as military technologies and school student counseling from our younger group due to a lack of a viable sample size.
We compared the change in pay between 2013 and 2017 and the current median income, for each major using a statistical technique to standardize the data. This produced a ranking of the best college major for pay.
We then pared this group down to only those degrees that currently have the median number of full-time workers or more, ones in which median income has gone up since 2013 and those that have unemployment rates below the 3.7% national average.
The ranking also includes a degree from each major category to provide, some variation to choose from (instead of all engineering-type degrees).
